The Plateros Visit
their Website
hereFor three generations, various Plateros have performed in this Navajo family band based in Tohajiilee, NM. Murphy Platero, the eldest in the current lineup, began playing in the band in the 1970s. In the 1990s he performed with another incarnation of Plateros with his wife, Janice, a bass guitarist. Through the years he wrote the lyrics of many songs, some of them recorded for the first time on Hang On. Their performance is filled with amazing energy and a mixture of blues, rock, funk and gospel. Currently Murphy’s son, Levi Platero is wowing national audiences with commanding, growling vocals reminiscent of the style of Todd Park Mohr, lead singer of Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Levi also plays phenomenal blues guitar riffs in the spirit of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. Murphy provides bass guitar and backing vocals, and Levi’s cousin Douglas, drives the beat on drums and percussion. Other honorary Plateros during recording sessions have included Jack Howell on guitars, Hammond B-3 organ, and percussion; D. Davis on drums and percussion; and Bronson Begay on keyboards. Songwriter Murphy Platero says his message is to “stay real and be humble.” They have performed over 250 shows since 2005 and they are considered one of the most exciting bands to watch live. In 2009 they won best blues at the New Mexico Music Awards for their 2nd album "Hang On". They were nominated twice by the Native American Music Awards in 2006 and 2008 and their first music video "Forever I'm With You" was nominated for best music video by the 2009 American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco CA. In 2008 to 2009 they were selected along with other well know national native acts in the 1st Native Music Rock Tour in 15 selected cities at Hard Rock Cafe's across the USA and these are just a few things this young band has achieved. The Plateros start off the entertainment lineup on Saturday at 12:00pm under the tent! View the entire rally schedule here |
